Comparing predictors of sentence self-paced reading times: Syntactic complexity versus transitional probability metrics

چکیده
When estimating the influence of sentence complexity on reading, researchers typically opt for one two main approaches: Measuring syntactic (SC) or transitional probability (TP). Comparisons predictive power both approaches have yielded mixed results. To address this inconsistency, we conducted a self-paced reading experiment. Participants read sentences varying complexity. From alternatives, selected set SC and TP measures, respectively, that provided best fit to data. We then compared contributions measures times when entered into same model. Our results showed while explained significant portions variance in (over above control variables: word/sentence length, word frequency position) included independent models, their changed drastically were Specifically, only observed effects TP. conclude our experiment variables bulk variance. comparing small TP, appear be more robust.

Underspecification of syntactic ambiguities: evidence from self-paced reading.
Syntactically ambiguous sentences are sometimes read faster than disambiguated strings. Models of parsing have explained this tendency by appealing either to a race in the construction of alternative structures or to reanalysis. However, it is also possible that readers of ambiguous sentences save time by strategically underspecifying interpretations of ambiguous attachments. In a self-paced re...
متن کاملSelf-paced reading and sentence comprehension in Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with disturbances in sentence processing, particularly for noncanonical sentences. The present study aimed to analyse sentence processing in PD patients and healthy control participants, using a word-by-word self-paced reading task and an auditory comprehension task. Both tasks consisted of subject relative (SR) and object relative (OR) sentences, with com...
متن کاملValidating self-paced sentence-by-sentence reading: story comprehension, recall, and narrative transportation
Previous studies on discourse have employed a self-paced sentence-bysentence paradigm to present text and record reading times. However, presenting discourse this way does not mirror real-world reading conditions; for example, this paradigm prevents regressions to earlier portions of the text. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the ecological validity of self-paced sentence-byse...

this thesis attempts to measure learning styles, self efficacy and intrinsic motivation as predictors of iranian ielts reading comprehension. in order to address this issue, a quantitative study was conducted on some randomly selected intact students at ferdowsi university. these two groups were assigned as they were undergraduate (ba=91) and graduate (ma =74) students; they were all aged betwe...
Syntactic Priming As a Test of Argument Structure: A Self-paced Reading Experiment
Using data from a behavioral structural priming experiment, we test two competing theoretical approaches to argument structure, which attribute different configurations to (in)transitive structures. These approaches make different claims about the relationship between unergatives and transitive structures selecting either a DP complement or a small clause complement in structurally unambiguous ...
